But anyone who has experienced a loved one’s death will recognise this.
The difference between a living person and a dead person is that a living person travels with you while a dead person is constantly moving further into the distance.
It does not matter how old or sick or disabled the living person is, they are with you and all their past lives and petty triumphs and tragedies are with you in the package that is them.
But a dead person immediately starts to travel away from you like a car turning out of the drive and heading off slowly down a road.
Virtue is so praiseworthy that wicked people practise it from self-interest.
Some people know good manners but use but a few.
Don’t allow people who do little or nothing for you control your thoughts or emotions.
Many a friendship has been wrecked,
Through gossip unfounded and unchecked.
The result is that much reading robs the mind of all elasticity, as the continual pressure of a weight does a spring, and that the surest way of never having any thoughts of your own is to pick up a book every time you have a free moment.
In this day and age – with the fast pace of life and all the endless possibilities that we can use to satisfy our senses – we forget, or at least put to the back of our minds, any thoughts of spirituality or mortality and about what may happen after life.
Life is a rich mixture of good times and bad times,
And it is being able to deal with both that produces good human beings.
We are living in a period of time in which the biggest threat to humanity, to all creatures, and to the Earth as we know it, might well be ourselves.
